may now be issued to qualified persons by the Marathon County Genealogy
Society (MCGS) under a new program authorized by the board of
directors. There are three different certificates - Pioneer, Early
Settler and Century - depending upon your ancestor's earliest date of
residence in Marathon County.
The Pioneer Certificate will be
issued to persons whose ancestors were residing in Marathon County
prior to 1861, Early Settler Certificates to persons whose ancestors
were residing in Marathon County prior to 1881, and the Century
Certificates to persons whose ancestors were residing in Marathon
County at least 100 years ago.
Certificates may be issued in the name of another person, other than the applicant, such as a sibling, child or grandchild.
An application will be required and proof must be provided in the form
of copies of documents establishing the fact claimed. Such documents
include Census, Land, Church, School, Naturalization (including
Declaration of Intent), Probate and Vital Records. A complete list is
included with the application.
The application and instruction information regarding the Heritage Certificate
is now available online. If you would prefer a packet mailed to you,
please send a large self-addressed stamped envelope with your request
to MCGS, PO Box 1512, Wausau, WI 54402-1512 or pick one up at one of
our regular monthly meetings.
This project is finally finished after 16 years! All the Register
of Deeds vital records are now on the computer.
We've completed an index for each of the three oldest plat books available for Marathon County which are 1882, 1895 and 1901.
More recently we completed Volume Three of our Surname Index which contains the new information that has been collected from our members during the last fifteen years. This publication is being uploaded to our "Members Only Area" of this web site now. It will not be printed for sale again since as we just concluded our pre-publication sale for this index.
